16. ISO
9000 and the Baldrige award
16. ISO and Baldrige The
globalization of markets, increasing quality requirements, tough competition,
and supplier pressures, have led to two parallel and visible
"quality" thrusts, nationally and internationally. These thrusts are
national/multinational quality awards -- the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality
Award (Baldrige Award) in the U.S. -- and the ISO 9000 series of international
standards.
* The
focus of the Baldrige Award is enhancing competitiveness. The two key
competitiveness thrusts: (1) delivery of ever-improving value to customers; and
(2) systematic improvement of company operational performance.
* The
focus of ISO 9000 registration is ensuring conformance quality. Its central
purpose is to provide a common basis for an independent and transportable
supplier qualification system. It is directed toward reducing audit costs and
helping to assure buyers that specified practices are being followed, both
important to enhancing and facilitating trade. The content of the ISO 9000
requirements standards reflect key conformity thrusts: consistent practice in
specified operations, including proper documentation of such practice.
