12. What is registration?
Quality system registration involves having an accredited independent
third-party, known as a quality system registrar, conduct an on-site audit of
your company's operations against the requirements of the appropriate standard.
Upon successful completion of this audit, your company will receive a
registration certificate that identifies your quality system as being in
compliance with ISO 9001, 9002, or 9003, Your company will also be listed in a
register maintained by the accredited third-party registration organization.
You may publicize your registration and use the third-party registrar's
certification mark on your advertising, letterheads, and other publicity
materials (but not on your products).
13. Why be registered?
Some say it is A COMPETITIVE NECESSITY! "Globalization has become a
present reality in the few years since the ISO 9000 series was published"
( in 1987) "Quality continues to grow in importance as a factor in market-place
success" " ... new market-place pressures on all producers worldwide
who wish to trade with European companies, or even to compete with European
companies in other markets." [from "Vision 2000"] The ISO 9000
series is a model international quality standard that is becoming a requirement
for doing business on a global scale. Small companies are increasingly under
pressure to register. The leaders can expect to have an advantage over those
who wait until forced.
There are several reasons to consider registration
now:
- "Competitive
Necessity!" There are thousands of registered companies. There is a
rush by those who sell overseas to become registered. As the first wave of
"direct sellers" is registered, pressure is mounting to have
lower tiers of suppliers registered. At a LA ISO Users Group a 40 person
company speaker described their reason for registering as: "Several
of our major customers asked, then demanded, and now expect suppliers to
be registered."
- "Competitive
Advantage!" Many are looking at early registration planning to
exploit registration to give them a competitive edge - in marketing - in
improved quality - and in reduced outside audit costs. That same (40
person company) speaker said "I am convinced that our increase in
business from 10 million to 12 million last year came directly from our
ISO 9002 registration activities."

Quality" A well conceived and managed ISO 9000-based quality system
will invariably produce a better all-around product. This is one of the
first quality systems to treat cost and schedule as important elements of
quality.
For a new company which has not yet developed
detailed processes and procedures there is a strong incentive to start right.
