o        7. What industries are involved?

o        8. Can I download standards from the internet?

o        9. What standards should I get? Where can I get standards?

6. What do the standards do? Collectively they provide guidance for quality management and general requirements for quality assurance.

"The International Standards in the ISO 9000 family describe what elements quality systems should encompass but not how a specific organization implements these elements. It is not the purpose of these International Standards to enforce uniformity of quality systems. Needs of organizations vary. The design and implementation of a quality system must necessarily be influenced by the particular objectives, products and processes, and specific practices of the organization."

7. What industries are involved? ANSI/ASQC Q9000-1-1994 and all International Standards in the ISO 9000 family are independent of any specific industry or economic sector. From Vision 2000 - " ... ISO/TC and all other standards writing bodies are discouraged from writing standards for specific industry/economic sectors. ..." ISO is beginning to sort out the differences in several sectors: Hardware Software Processed Materials Services

8. Can I download standards from the Internet? No. They are copyrighted.

9. What standards should I get? Where can I get standards? Get the whole family. (Herb's advice: Get the latest issue of the "ISO 9000 Compendium". - ANSI phone 212-642-4900.) At the very least, look at the titles and get ALL that might be relevant. (ASQC publishes standards in paper and electronic form-(unfortunately the electronic version does not include the whole series - you still are likely to need the compendium.) ASQC phone 800-248-1946)
